Introduction
The new guidance will support the design, planting and maintenance of street trees and hedgerows by developers and highway authorities.
The guidance will:
- ensure developers and highway authorities have all the appropriate information needed to successfully plant and maintain street trees and hedgerows;
- provide practical guidance and checklists to ensure planting is well-integrated, resilient and appropriate for the local environment;
- be used alongside existing planning, highways and tree protection policies;
- enable developers and highway authorities to have the information needed;
- enable developers and highway authorities to consistently increase the quantity, quality and range of street trees and planting in Calderdale;
- contribute to the protection and enhancement of the natural environment;
- help deliver Calderdale's ambitious Ecological Emergency Action Plan and White Rose Forest Plan.

About the guidance
Technical guidance on street trees and hedgerows for new developments, highways and major projects was adopted by Calderdale Council in March 2025.
The guidance will support applicants in delivering development, highways and major projects that meet high standards of design and sustainability.
It will provide practical advice and checklists to:
- Ensure that tree and hedgerow planting is carefully planned.
- Ensure it is well-integrated.
- Ensure it is resilient and suited to the local environment.
