About the proposals

1: Closing Tuel Lane Infant School

Calderdale Council gives notice that it plans to close Tuel lane Infant School in Sowerby Bridge on 12 April 2026.

2: Expanding Christ Church CE (VA) Junior School

The Leeds Diocesan Board of Education gives notice that it plans to make Christ Church CE (VA) Junior School in Sowerby Bridge bigger. This will turn it into a through primary school for children aged 4 - 11 years from 12 April 2026.

The plan to expand Christ Church CE (VA) Junior School will only go ahead if Tuel Lane Infant School closes. So the expansion will not happen if Tuel Lane stays open.

What will the closure and expansion mean for Christ Church CE (VA) Junior School?

  • The expanded school will stay as a Voluntary Aided school.
  • The expanded school will offer a nursery plus 210 places for children aged 4 - 11 years.

What will the closure and expansion mean for current pupils?

  • No children will lose their school place.
  • All pupils currently at Tuel Lane Infant School will move onto the roll of the expanded Christ Church CE (VA) School.
  • Transport arrangements will stay the same.

What will the closure and expansion mean for the school sites?

  • At first, the new through primary school will use both the existing Tuel Lane and Christ Church sites.
  • For the expansion, improvements to the Christ Church site need to be made.
  • Once the improvements to the Christ Church buildings are finished, the whole school will move to the Christ Church site.
