Pellon Routes to School Consultation

Please note: the online survey is now closed.
Introduction
The survey is anonymous and will not collect any personal information about you.
It will close at midnight on 26 January 2025.
The Pellon Routes to Schools project is a package of proposals designed to make walking, cycling and wheeling journeys safer and easier. This particularly applies to trips to and from local schools like Ling Bob Junior Infant and Nursery School and Christ Church Pellon C of E (VC) Primary School.
We have identified six locations for improvements around Rye Lane and Highroad Well Lane in Pellon. The proposals include junction improvements, pedestrian crossings, narrowing of vehicle lanes, and footway widening.
We produced concept designs in 2021 which we consulted on in 2022. The amended designs on this page have been developed following this consultation and also include feedback from Active Travel England.
We are listening and we want to hear what you have to say on the designs before we shape the final proposals.

Overview of proposals
There are different proposals relating to six locations in Pellon. The six locations are labelled A to F. Each includes a map and some information about the proposals for that location.
Key to symbols

Location A: Highroad Well Lane, Stretchgate Lane and Sandbeds Road. Includes the area near Christ Church Pellon C of E VC Primary School.
We are proposing to:
- Improve the junction of Highroad Well Lane and Stretchgate Lane, replacing the mini roundabout with a simpler T-junction.
- Add a new zebra crossing on Highroad Well Lane.
- Make improvements for walking opposite Christ Church Pellon C of E VC Primary School, including wider footways and upgrading the existing crossing on Sandbeds Road to a zebra crossing.
- Close Albert Drive to through traffic.
- Install a raised hump on the Stretchgate Lane approach to Highroad Well Lane junction.

Key to map:
- Widening of footway and new zebra crossing on Sandbeds Road.
- Mini roundabout replaced with new simplified priority junction.
- End of Stretchgate Lane raised up to footway level to reduce vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian access.
- Driveway access maintained.
- New zebra crossing on Highroad Well Lane.
- New bench at end of Albert Drive.
- Cycle connection between Albert Drive and Stretchgate Lane.
- Albert Drive closed to through traffic, whilst maintaining walking and cycling routes.
Location B. Near Ling Bob Junior Infant and Nursery School. Junction of Highroad Well Lane, Albert Road, Sandhall Lane and Rye Lane.
We are proposing to:
- Replace the mini roundabout at the junction of Highroad Well Lane/Albert Road, with a simpler junction. This will prioritise traffic moving along Highroad Well Lane.
- Add a new zebra crossing on Highroad Well Lane, outside Ling Bob Junior Infant & Nursery School.
- Widen the footway on Albert Road.
- Add new pedestrian crossings at Highroad Well Lane, Albert Road and Rye Lane.
- Raise the level of the road at the northern end of Sandhall Lane, including a raised crossing at the junction with Highroad Well Lane. This will provide a smoother experience for people walking, cycling and wheeling.
- Add a new layby at the junction of Albert Road and Highroad Well Lane. This will replace parking at the existing layby.
- Maintain access to driveways for properties along Albert Road and Sandhall Lane.
These proposals will improve pedestrian accessibility and safety, by reducing vehicle speeds and making it easier to cross the roads. Adding a zebra crossing in front of the school and uncontrolled crossings on side streets will help connect the areas.

Key to map:
- New informal pedestrian crossings.
- Mini roundabout replaced with priority junction.
- New zebra crossing.
- New layby to replace parking at the existing layby at the junction of Albert Road and Highroad Well Lane.
- Crossing moved to align with existing footpath to the north.
- Footway widening to provide more space for pedestrians.
- Driveway access maintained.
- Northern end of Sandhall Lane raised up to footway level to reduce vehicle speeds and support pedestrian movements.
- New raised crossing from Highroad Well Lane to reduce vehicle speeds and provide safer crossing.
Location C: Ashville Gardens
We are proposing to :
- Add a new informal pedestrian crossing at the end of the footpath leading to Christ Church Pellon C of E VC Primary School.
This proposal will improve pedestrian access and help to connect the school to areas within the Ryecroft estate.

Key for map:
- New informal pedestrian crossing on Ashville Gardens, opposite existing footpath access to Christ Church Pellon C of E VC Primary School.
Location D: Rye Lane and Ashville Gardens
We are proposing to:
- Change the junction to give priority to traffic travelling along Rye Lane.
- Add a new zebra crossing on Rye Lane.
- Narrow the vehicle lanes and widen the footways on Rye Lane.
- Install a raised hump through the new junction.
Pedestrian accessibility will be improved by widening footways and reducing crossing distances. The raised hump and carriageway narrowing will encourage lower vehicle speeds. Combined, these measures will improve pedestrian safety.

Key for map:
- Raised junction up to footway level, to reduce vehicle speeds and support pedestrian movement.
- New zebra crossing.
- Building out of the kerbs to reduce vehicle speeds and shorten the pedestrian crossing distance.
Location E: Rye Lane
We are proposing to:
- Raise the level of the road and add a new raised pedestrian crossing at the end of the footpath leading to Ling Bob playing fields, and Ling Bob Junior Infant and Nursery School.
Raising the level of the road at the pedestrian crossing will slow down vehicles as they approach. Wider footways and a shorter crossing will provide better visibility for pedestrians and drivers. This will improve road safety. These improvements help connect the school and playing fields to areas to the north.

Key for map:
- New pedestrian crossing on Rye Lane opposite footpath to Ling Bob playing fields and Ling Bob Junior Infant and Nursery School.
- Raised road to footway level to slow vehicles and support pedestrian movements.
- Building out of the kerbs to slow vehicles and shorten the pedestrian crossing distance.
Location F: Rye Lane and Ryecroft Lane
We are proposing to:
- Replace the mini roundabout at the junction of Ryecroft Lane and Rye Lane with a simple T-junction, prioritising traffic on Rye Lane.
- Widen footways.
- Add two new pedestrian crossings on Rye Lane.
- Add soft landscaping, potentially incorporating trees.
These proposals will create more space for pedestrians. The additional crossing facilities will improve pedestrian safety and accessibility. Adding new landscaped areas will improve the area. Access to existing driveways will be maintained.

Key for map:
- Mini roundabout replaced with new simplified priority junction.
- New or extended soft landscaping to improve public area and reduce flood risk.
- New pedestrian crossings.
- Driveway access maintained.
